Fundación ECCA is a non-profit making organisation with headquarters in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and is implanted in many different provinces and local government communities throughout Spain national territory. These include, Andalucia, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Castilla-León, Extremadura, Galicia, Madrid and Murcia. It has been working in the area of adult-education activities for more than 3 decades.

As stated in the statutes of Radio ECCA, Canary Island Foundation, a priority of the institution is to obtain the following Objectives:

  • To promote culture and raise the level of personal skills in adults;
  • To transmit culture to large majority sectors, always putting interests of the most needy sectors first;
  • To respond to “the fundamental human right” for literacy and a basic education, knoledge and learning (according to UNESCO’s declaration on adult education);
  • To maintain as their main priority, the dedication to those who know less. All remaining sectors of the society in need of permanent education, can also participate within the target population of the Foundation;
  • To give a European dimension to our methodology by transferring our know-how, contributing where possible to the globalisation of the new community and fighting against social exclusion.

Its own methodology – the “ECCA System”- has been developed by Fundación ECCA, and applied to a means of social communication, id est the radio, which makes the dissemination of its teaching possible to a massive audience. The ECCA methodology is based on the use of three synchronised elements: recorded class, printed material and live class (given by the teacher/tutor). The printed material is completed at the same time as the student listens to a recorded class explanation by the radio teacher. Then, the students meet in groups once a week assisted by the presence of a personal tutor to clear up doubts. This work method, composed of the three complementary elements, is specifically designed for adults who wish to expand their training or recycle themselves in those training aspects that will help contribute to finding employment or promotion. It has also been prepared for those who are searching for continued training to improve their own social and personal development.

Fundación ECCA has also established their methodology in 15 Latin American countries.
